Capacity of Virtual Power Plants Worldwide is Expected to More than Quintuple by 2023

Virtual power plants (VPPs), which employ software and IT innovations to achieve the optimum usage of grid assets while maintaining the proper balance of the electricity grid, are expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of the power sector.  As energy markets accelerate in the direction of a greater reliance upon distributed energy resources (DER), VPPs can help create an “energy cloud” business model in which anyone, anywhere can buy and sell energy services on an open market.  According to a recent report from Navigant Research, the total worldwide capacity of virtual power plants is expected to more than quintuple in the next 9 years, growing from 4,800 megawatts (MW) in 2014 to nearly 28,000 MW by 2023.

“Combining a rich diversity of independent resources into a network via sophisticated planning, scheduling, and bidding of distributed generation-based services, virtual power plants have the potential to harness and distribute electricity in ways hardly envisioned just a few years ago,” says Peter Asmus, principal research analyst with Navigant Research.  “In order to make these markets work, though, rules need to be established to allow these transactions to flow back and forth across a common carrier grid.”

More Than 1.5 Million Fuel Cell Systems Are Expected to be Shipped Annually by 2023

During 2013 and 2014, the fuel cell market continued to see the greatest demand from stationary applications, including utility-scale fuel cells, fuel cells for industrial and commercial buildings, and fuel cells for residential power.  The spread of distributed generation (DG), which represents a shift away from traditional centralized power generation model toward a more diverse and resilient grid infrastructure, is helping to drive strong interest in stationary fuel cells.  According to a new report from Navigant Research, worldwide shipments of fuel cell systems are expected to exceed 1.5 million annually by 2023.

“Fuel cells fit neatly into the spectrum of technologies that support the DG movement,” says Lisa Jerram, principal research analyst with Navigant Research.  “As a result, Navigant Research sees the stationary fuel cell sector as the one with the strongest global potential, in terms of fuel cell systems shipped, within the fuel cell market in both the near- and long-term.”

Installed Base of LED Streetlights Is Expected to Exceed 116 Million by 2023

The street light market is undergoing a rapid transition from conventional technologies, such as high pressure sodium, to light-emitting diode (LED) lights.  Although high pressure sodium lights remain the biggest sellers today, some companies are already planning to discontinue their non-LED product lines.  According to a recent report from Navigant Research, the installed base of LEDs in street lighting worldwide is expected to grow from 13.2 million in 2014 to more than 116 million in 2023.

“City residents appreciate the improved nighttime visibility provided by the whiter light of LED street lights, while city managers enjoy the cost savings that come from the reduction in both energy consumption and maintenance costs provided by LEDs,” says Jesse Foote, senior research analyst with Navigant Research.  “LED prices have come down to the point where payback periods are becoming attractive for cities, with or without government subsidies.”
